Ted Costa Responds to the Scared Governor

Today brought important news on several fronts for our recall campaign.

First, I know that all of you are anxious to start signing and circulating the recall petitions. We cannot start this process until the petition is certified by the Secretary of State. Yesterday, Democrat Secretary of State Kevin Shelley returned our petition with some 22 suggested changes including removing the basic instructions that have been on all petitions for years.

Our lawyers are reviewing his requests and we will comply with all of them and submit our final attempt on Monday. State Law then gives Mr. Shelley another ten days to certify the petition which will be Friday March 21st.

As we wait for the official certification, please get as many people as you can signed up at DavisRecall.com so we have a strong start right out of the gate.

While the press and the governor’s spin specialists insist that our broad-based grassroots effort is just a small group of disgruntled voters, they are doing EVERYTHING they can to stop us! Tells me that they certainly think Governor Davis is in real trouble if the recall election is called and he has to run on his record.

The latest attempt to thwart our efforts is aimed at what are known as “professional” signature gathering firms. According to press accounts, they have been offered very lucrative contracts, rumored to be in the $3 to $4 per signature range, and the only stipulation is that they must NOT work on the recall. Of course the initiative they will be working on will RAISE your taxes!

The press and the “experts” think this is a big problem, but they are NOT in touch with what is really going on with our recall campaign. You the citizens have been signing up by the TENS OF THOUSANDS to circulate recall petitions and once the petition is certified I think there will be three or four times more VOLUNTEER signature gatherers out in front of those grocery stores than we could ever have paid for through the professional firms.

As we wait for the Secretary of State to certify the petitions I need you to do two very important things. First, please continue to check our updated web site at DavisRecall.com where you will find a lot of important information. Share this link with all your friends—we make it easy for you with the new E-Cards that you can send them!

Finally, we have established a contribution page where you can help us keep up with all the work that needs to be done. Even a massive volunteer effort has extensive costs for printing and mailing petitions. We do not depend on the big special interests that have sold out to Governor Davis, but on hundreds of thousands of small donors like you and your friends.

Even if you can only send $10, that would go a long toward helping us reach our goal of 890,000 signatures by July 4th! If you can send more, that would be even better. You can click here to contribute online with your credit card, or you can mail contributions to: Davis Recall Committee, c/o People's Advocate, 3407 Arden Way, Sacramento, California 95825.

Whatever you can send or do, I want you to know that you, the volunteers, are the backbone and reason for this important recall effort. Together, WE WILL SUCCEED!

—Ted Costa, Proponent and Chairman of the Davis Recall Committee
